Here's some thoughts after finishing 5K #8 of 12 tonight.
1. Eating like crap for a week and not running for almost a month was an absolute horrible combination.
2. This year has flown by and I can't believe I already finished #8!
3. Oddly enough, running 3 miles is easier (even at 1am with no sleep) with my RV mates. I was really missing my St. Jude run peeps during this race (first time running since Memphis).
4. Lastly, I'm so proud of myself of picking this New year's resolution and sticking to it.
Vet School Day 173!
Pathology involves the study of the causes of disease. We’re taking two versions of pathology this semester: general pathology, which looks for the “essential nature” of disease investigating gross and microscopic lesions, and clinical pathology, which looks at the biochemical nature of what is occurring in the body.
Our general pathology professor says that the best clinicians he knows really understand their pathology, because they understand the “why” and “how” disease occurs.
One of the most important elements of pathology is the necropsy, or post mortem exam. There are a few goals of a necropsy, which is the most underrated source of continuing education for the veterinarian.
1. Expose all areas of disease that were or were not seen in the live patient
2. Identify organic lesions to explain clinical and laboratory findings
3. Explain or attempt to explain how and in what sequence disease occurred
I’m much more interested in gross pathology and things I can determine from field necropsy, but I’m doing my best to also correlate histology with gross lesions in my knowledge. Pictured here is a cow liver with fatty change. This is a common disease that occurs when the cow is in negative energy balance while lactating and for one reason or another is unable to compensate. The liver is tan, greasy, and the cut surface bulges. The next picture is the histology of fatty change in the liver. The cytoplasm of the hepatocytes (liver cells) is taken up by adipose, represented by the well define clear vacuoles and the nucleus is pushed to the side of the cell.
The third images demonstrates the gross pathology of three vet students in lab on a Friday. Two are working together to be distracted by a camera while the third is discussing weekend plans. None are paying attention. Like fatty liver, this is a reversible change and does not yet mean death of the cell—or vet student in this case.
We strive to keep your goals and training programs streamlined for success, which is why we are limiting our memberships. Our goal is to avoid the “rush hour” gym craziness that can prevent you from getting on the equipment you need and cause frustration. Additionally, we know that sometimes you can’t get to a gym during “normal hours; to remedy this issue, our facility utilizes a keyless entry system that gives you freedom to train on your time, meaning 24/7. Never miss a workout because of timing again.
If you are interested, send us a DM or email us at info @superiorbarbellclub.com and we can schedule a walk-through, discuss pricing options, and put you on our presale list 🙌
