I've been drawing blood for close to 10 years and I always hear people with tattoos say that they don't like needles or that they have a severe needle phobias. Oftentimes, it's met with an eyeroll from other people in the room. Other times people will be shocked that someone can endure this laborious procedure in the name of art and self expression.
Well, here's a simplified explanation that may help some understand what these people are referring to when they discuss their fear if needles. The art of tattooing is the process of placing ink within the first 2 layers of skin with a shallow but rapidly penetrating needle (pins - thin metal rods, not hollow). This pushes the ink in between the layers of skin. Each needle has a different purpose. Tattooing is normally done with a tattoo gun for better control and precision but there are other methods.
Now on the other hand, we have phlebotomy needles (or hypodermic needles). These are hollow needles intended for siphoning blood or other materials from the body for diagnostic and other biological purposes. These needles go into the 3rd layer of skin where the veins and arteries are located. The needles also range from .5 to 1.5 inches in length. The bore of the needle (width of needle opening) can also vary depending on the gauge.
When you think of the visual characteristics of each process having no background knowledge which procedure scares you more?
I'd love to hear your thoughts! If you have any additional information that may provide more insight, feel free to comment!
