I was 7 years old when I first fell in love with music.
The bombs were shaking the earth around us and gunfire was everywhere.
But somehow, I found peace in the music of Beethoven.
The sounds that came from a neighbor's broken window.
The Piano rocked me more than bombs ever could.
My fingers fluttered in the air with every key press.
I played air piano before I even knew that Piano’s existed.
But when I found out where the sound came from,
I did everything I needed to do to get my hands on a Piano.
But in Aleppo Syria, everything is old and destroyed.
I worked 4 months to buy a old 5-octave keyboard for $150.00
And when I was 12 I began to play.
I realized that the Piano is like a woman singing to me,
Letting me know that all will be ok.
And I fell in love with her voice.
She became half of me and I half of her.
My fingers were the muscles that made the voice come out of the mouth of the piano.
We needed each other and I have not stopped playing.
I perform as much as I can.
And I learned mostly everything by myself.
But you cannot learn everything by yourself.
Last year I began taking Piano Classes Here in Aleppo.
I’m learning a lot.
I hate the war
But at least I still find peace in the voice of the piano.
My name is Amjad Daher
I live in Aleppo, Syria
