In case you missed the first review I shared of our meal at @ratafiamontreal, here is the deal: The concept is a bar that serves fancy desserts and pairs their drinks with their dishes. We needed caffeine more than alcohol so we ordered coffee instead of wine, but the concept seems like a good idea. And we were their first customers! (So keep that in mind.)
Seeing this dessert on the menu, I was just as excited as with the lemon dessert. I really enjoyed the mozzarella ice cream (very salty at first and eases into a mild cheesiness). There was also cheese in the chantilly, beautifully ripe strawberries, a simple cake, and a timur-pepper and tomato caramel. Just like with the lemon dish, most of the fun came from experimenting with the different flavors and seeing how different each bite could be. The tomato from the caramel didn’t always come through, but whenever it did, I enjoyed it.
I was happy that they included real strawberries (unaltered ingredients were lacking in their lemon dish). However, I have a similar complaint about the plating as with the lemon dish: why so cramped?
The high score is due more to the innovation than to deliciousness. Still, I look forward to seeing how Ratafia develops. 8️⃣/🔟
