I've noticed such a tendency here in Russia: people who've never been to London tend to say: "I don't like London as it's rainy and cold". Or this one is even better: "There's lot's of rain and fog in London - it must be a gloomy place". Russians have such a stereotypical opinion because of English classical literature they've read: Charles Dickens, Galsworthy, Jane Austen... Yes, London used to be much colder than now. I saw pictures of people ice-skating on the Thames, which is now absolutely impossible to imagine. But modern London has much more sunny days per year than Moscow, and it's much warmer and less rainy than Moscow. London is on the same latitude as Kiev, plus there's the Gulf Stream current there, but still these facts are not enough to beat the stereotype!
