My favorite part of summer piano is helping each of my students compose their own piece. It gives them a great sense of ownership and pride. It’s also a great way to sneak in some theory 😉. Do you teach composition in your studio? What are benefits you have seen?
Don’t get left out!
Join us tomorrow as we celebrate Make Music Day with Christopher Terpin! He created an app that helps you play the music you love as an instrument on your phone. He will be out front (weather permitting) jamming out, come help him jam!

Did you know that both coloring and playing and instrument uses both of your brain hemispheres equally?⠀
When coloring, the left side of your brain, the creative hemisphere is choosing colors and imparting emotion to the choices. At the same time, your right brain hemisphere, the logical, ordered side, is working to stay inside pre-planned lines and make logical progressions with those colors.⠀
Listening to, playing, reading, and creating music involves practically every part of the brain. For example, playing the violin requires the right hand to do something different than the left, activating both hemispheres of the brain. It uses the peripheral nervous system, which controls movement of your fingers, as well as gross and fine motor skills. The brain’s executive function, which plans and makes decisions, comes into play as a musician plays one part but keeps focus on what’s coming next. Couple that with the total sensory input – visual, auditory, emotional and all at the same time – and it becomes a total “workout” for the brain.⠀
In addition, the corpus callosum – the strip of tissue that connects the left and right hemisphere of the brain – is also larger in musicians.⠀
Working with both hemispheres helps makes connections within the brain that lead to clearer thinking and deeper levels of intelligence.⠀
Power up your brain by learning the violin using The Romel Joseph Collection today!⠀
