My winter garden isn't where I want it to be but that's okay, I'm learning along the way and remembering to celebrate the wins 🌿 If you have any tips PLEASE let me know! I'm always hungry to learn how we can improve our kitchen garden! 🌱💚
The first gherkin/ cucamelon / mouse melon of the season!!! And my thumb for size. Can’t take the cuteness 🤭
Got cherry tomatoes coming out of your ears? No problem! Pop the tops off and throw em in the crockpot whole with your herb blend of choice. Zap them with an immersion blend (or food processor) and bam! Tomato sauce for days. I'm all about that small batch canning this year. My crockpot makes a little over 4 pints.
My first ripe melon of the season! This is a Mango Melon, also called a Peach Vine, and guess what (?!) it doesn’t taste like either! It’s a slightly citrusy cantaloupe and I plan on juicing it and using it as a counter for spice in one of my hot sauces! Its a long, vigorous vine with tons of fruit and I’m definitely saving the seeds for @saveloveseedswap 💕👩🌾
Finally some wax beans to harvest. 😋 Z4
🥒 Post-gardening, pre-pickle making haul. Some of these are so big, I can’t even fathom being able to eat them all (even if we pickle). We put some in a basket and marked them free and they are now off to fellow cucumber loving neighbors. 🥒 #comeandgetit
Happy Friyay!! More recipes tomorrow. Have a wonderful weekend! ✨QOTD Any beautiful weekend plans?
I tried growing the “Black Sea Man” tomato (lol) this year & did not have much success. The cracked skin is due to irregular watering, but they also aren’t large in size. I wonder if it’s because I grew it in a grow bag rather than in ground? 🤔 I also expected a more purple-ish color.. perhaps there’s not enough sun in my backyard? Despite all the negatives, they still tasted delicious! The taste is sweet w/ a slight tart at the end. The pulp inside has a purple-ish tint as well, super cool! Will definitely try to grow this variety again! Nothing beats home grown tomatoes🌱

I didn't pick tomatoes for a few days, so this is what I just picked 😊 The red, orange and pink ones in the front will be seeds for next year. A cool thing about tomatoes is watching them hybridize and cross pollinate over time. I started 2 years ago with only 2 varieties: seeds from my dad that he got from my grandfather (a French heirloom that looks like a long pepper and tastes awesome - but I'm not having much luck with them this year (pic2) beause of blossom end rot 😔) and seeds from a cherry tomato I liked from a CSA. Over the past two years they've grown and pollinated each other, slowly creating hybrids in shape, colour and taste. The cherries seem to change traits especially fast. The pink one is new to me this year, and it is soooo good so I want to keep it and grow it next year! 🍅
I gave the smaller bowl to my neighbourhood friend - reminding me that growing plants for food to share with others and make a stronger community is a principle of permaculture 💚 and sustainable agriculture.
The garden has been enjoying this spell of storm/sun/storm/sun we've been getting. I have meagre peppers growing, more tomatoes and the kale and beans (and roses!) are having a second growth spur!
Toured the most magical front yard edible garden this morning! This home belongs to a woman who, 30 years ago, decided to rip out her front lawn and replace it with 40 fruit trees. She’s a master gardener, has lived and traveled all over the world, and didn’t even eat fruit when she planted all of this! She said it just never made sense to her why folks would have barren lawns, or God forbid Astro-turf. Instead, she believed that the land should provide food for humans and animals alike. I’m obsessed with what she built, and learned so much from her in the short hour we spent together today. Full write-up coming early next week.
If YOU are growing #foodnotlawns in the LA area, I wanna meet you! And tour your garden and talk shop with you! I have a list of close to 30 folks so far, and am just getting started. DM me, I’d love to speak with ya. 🤗
Kismis Belimbing Wuluh! ❤️
Pohon belimbing wuluh/BW di halaman buahnya ga ngerti rimbunnya parah. Jadi drpd terbuang & rugi, Minggu kemarin panen banyak & diolah jadi kismis. Ternyata ennnaaakkkk ❤️
