🚨 BLOG ALERT - 5 ways to boost your self-confidence 👊🏻 Henry Ford said it best, “Whether you think you can or you think you can’t, you are right”. Skills are important, but it is our confidence and belief in our abilities that determine whether we succeed or not💡 You can train, work hard and have the best horses, but without confidence, the journey to becoming the best rider you can be will always be compromised. So here are 5 ways you can build your confidence from the inside out 👩🏼‍🏫 . 1️⃣ Gratitude 🙏🏼 This might seem like an odd one but comparing yourself to others, especially on a show with many other great riders, can make us feel small and insecure. Instead, when we focus on what we do have and what we have already accomplished we start to feel thankful for what is already there. Regularly practicing this positive focus on what we can be grateful for has a profound impact on our self-confidence and overall happiness. After all, if we can’t be happy with what we have already achieved today, we probably won’t feel satisfied achieving other goals either. . 2️⃣ Power pose 💃 We don’t always wake up with the right mindset. Sometimes we feel tired, unmotivated or insecure (...) . Want to continue reading? - Just follow the link in my bio (or visit my website)! ☝🏻 . 👉🏻 Want to become a more confident rider? Over time I’ve learned to ask better questions that in turn give me better answers. Obviously, I also share this with my clients and I’ve noticed recently I often refer back to these 2 simple questions. Instead of wondering if you are doing it right or wrong, ask yourself, “Is this working out the way I want it to?” If the answer is ‘yes’, great 👍🏻 keep doing it. If the answer is ‘no’ 🚫 change it! Life is already complicated enough, so keep it simples 🧘‍♀ . 👉🏻 Share if you agree! . 💡 Need some more support to improve your mental game? Well, this is Cian’s grandfather’s quote to be precise 👆🏻 But talking to Cian about his mental skills and becoming successful, it became clear to me that his work ethic and eagerness to learn has hugely contributed to his success so far 👊🏻 He embodies the #qotd and is someone we can all learn from in my opinion! So here are 3⃣ of the most important lessons I learned from Cian: . 1⃣ Have a plan. Make sure to carve out time to think about what’s most important to you and how you will reach those goals. 2⃣ Think outside the box 📦 Whether it’s about how you can make your business succeed, how you will find your next horse or how to approach the jump off. Think independently and think in solutions instead of problems. 3⃣ Start with the basics! Perhaps the most important lesson Cian shared with me is how he approaches every horse and rider he trains, and that is starting with the basics, and taking his time to get the fundamentals right before moving on. It’s easy to want to skip straight to the big classes, but if you haven’t trained consistently, your results won’t be consistent either. Trust me, there is no quick fix in becoming a pro 💪🏻 . 👉🏻 Agree with Cian? Make sure to share this post so more riders can learn from his pro wisdom! . #qotd #learnfromthebest #annettepaterakis #equestrian #mental #coach

Are you the dreamy 💭, relaxed 😎, always a bit late ⏰ kinda girl (or guy)? You might struggle to get focused at times and, as a result, make silly mistakes - am I right 🙉?? So here are 3 ways for you to prepare like a pro and get into laser sharp focus! . 1⃣ In order to be focused, your body needs to be just as alert and awake as you brain. Ever won a class/show half asleep 😴? No, of course not, so walk around, go for a run 🏃🏼‍♀ or do some jumping jacks 🤸🏼‍♀ . 2⃣ Now, prepare your mind by reminding yourself of what you need to do to perform at your best today. Then think about how you will warm up your horse and what he needs to be at his best too. . 3⃣ Finally, visualise how you want to ride in the ring. If you have already walked the course, you can be very specific and visualise your plan in detail. If you haven’t yet, just imagine how you want to ride, feel, connect and perform today 👊🏻 . #focus #enjoytheride #masteryourmind #equestrian #sport #mentalcoach #annettepaterakis

🚨 SUCCESS STORY 🐎 Sabrina Rodríguez - How I recovered from surgery to win again . Every day I get up with a single goal in mind: helping others 👊🏻 Helping others to build their confidence, to increase their focus, and to prepare for competition and, ultimately, to perform at their peak and to enjoy the ride. But sometimes, you end up helping someone in ways you could not have imagined 😮 . Meet Sabrina ( @sabrinarider5). Sabrina is a showjumper and she reached out to me leading up to very serious surgery. Her situation were unique and very challenging. She needed to prepare herself mentally in order to get through this incredibly tough procedure and to work through her post-surgery recovery. I suggested to Sabrina that she should join my Master Your Mind Online Mental Training Program 📱 She was one of the first students to complete the program. In just over three months, she made it from the operating table to back in the saddle and she's winning again! 💪🏻 I cannot begin to express how proud I am of Sabrina 👍🏻 Here is her story... . 👉🏻 Want to read Sabrina’s story and how she overcame immense adversity to get back in the saddle and win again? QOTD 👆🏻!!! When I spoke to @jeroendubbeldam last year I asked him how he managed to be so successful with so many different horses 🐎 He explained that just like with riders, horses too need time, patience and deliberate work to unlock their full potential 💪🏻 I couldn’t agree more! So here are 3 ways you can be more deliberate in your training so you too can make the most of your horse’s abilities: . 1⃣ make a clear road map 🗺 per horse. Know what your horse still needs to improve on to get ready for the next level and make sure to be specific! 2⃣ Don’t overwhelm yourself or your horse with 10 different things you want to improve in one go, you’ll both get confused and probably frustrated. You’ll also make very little progress. So instead, pick 1 or max 2 things you want to work on and stick to that until it has become second nature. 3⃣ Take time to connect 🏇🏾 Figuring out how your horse learns best and what it needs from you in order to improve requires you to get to know your horse. Especially the horses that challenge us - take time to get to know them both in and out of the saddle. . 👉🏻 Say “YES” if you agree. Can you tell how happy I am to be back in the tack again? 😄 So it’s actually been 1.5 years since my last ride 😮 and today was just so wonderful hacking out through beautiful Norway 🇳🇴 I loved it 😍!! • However, let’s get real, I’ve had to overcome my own fair share of fear. The last time I rode I fell off and not riding regularly meant that I felt really scared 😧! I decided to use EFT (a very helpful tool I use a lot, including when working with clients) and for 7 days I worked on this fear and reprocessed several different falls I’ve experienced over the years. It felt really good doing this and I got some interesting insights 💡 • Today, being back on the horse again I didn’t feel this same fear I felt in the past (mostly about my horse tripping and me falling off as a result) partly because my horse Emo was just the best! • So 🥁🥁🥁 it’s time! It’s time for me to start riding again or at least a start with finding a place where I can ride close to home. Which means I need some help... 🆘 • 👉🏻 If anyone knows of any yards with trustworthy horses that I could ride in the area of Kent (UK 🇬🇧) please let me know in the comments below (or DM me) 🙏🏻 I’ll keep you guys posted on my journey towards coming full circle ⭕ • #enjoytheride #overcomingfear #backinthesaddle #horses #horseriding #showjumping #equestrian #mentaltraining #mentalskills #annettepaterakis #coach

Perhaps most known for his ability to manage everything to perfection, Cian shared so many wise lessons with me during our hour-long conversation back in early 2018, I don’t really need to add anything at all! So, for this blog, I will let Cian do the talking. Here are 5 lessons I learned from Cian which I hope will also be valuable for you. . 1️⃣ Be organized. “In order to keep everyone informed of the training, and show plans and timings, we have created WhatsApp groups with every member of staff and client. There is a group per stable and every night we run through the plan for the next day. I also make notes for myself every night, ‘breakfast, gym, ride that horse, teach that client’. I have a whole plan for the day and then I tick things off as I go along. This works better for the staff as well, as they always know exactly what the plan is in advance and I can always check to find out where everyone is or what they are doing instead of taking people away from their tasks by constantly calling or interrupting them.” . 2️⃣ Write it down. “In general we write everything down so we keep notes of everything (...)" . Ever noticed how perfection is holding you back from being the confident and consistent rider you want to be? In many ways, constantly striving for perfection can be debilitating, exhausting and disappointing. If you are a perfectionist 🙋🏼‍♀ then follow these 4 steps now: . 1⃣ apply the 80% rule, meaning you always work towards doing it right 80% of the time. This allows for you to make mistakes and to learn from them. Which leads me to... 2⃣ ride to ride great, instead of riding to avoid mistakes! Being ok with making mistakes means you allow yourself to fail and learn from it. 3⃣ instead of wanting everything to be perfect when in the ring, pick☝🏻thing that you will focus on (like your rhythm for example). This directs your brain to go from chaos 🤯 to🧘‍♀ focus. 4⃣ And lastly, trust yourself and your horse and enjoy the ride 🏇🏽 . 👉🏻 Need more help becoming a more confident and consistent rider? 👩🏼‍🏫 I’m doing lots of workshops this year and I love it! ❤️ Firstly cause I love to travel and meet new people 🌎 Secondly because being able to teach and share what I know about becoming the best version of ourselves, means I get to learn it myself again and again and make it part of me. It also means I need to walk my own talk so I have to apply what I preach too 🤓 All this means I benefit from it all just as much as someone hearing it for the first time. What’s amazing is that within the 3 days of the workshop I notice the group transforming into a team and the atmosphere becomes so supportive and positive, it’s such a great thing to be a part of! So thank you for everyone who has already attended one of my workshops 🙏🏻 . 👉🏻 My next workshop will take place near Oslo on June 10-12 and will be hosted by Thea Backe ( @theabackejansen) 🇳🇴. #Repost @annette_paterakis ・・・ How often do we get the results or ride that we were hoping for 🤔? Let’s face it, probably less than 10% of the time, especially when working with horses 🐎 So what do we do when we don’t get those desired results? • The other day I was working with a client and she had just returned from a show. Her results weren’t really what she had hoped for but at the end of our session she was so excited about her training and next shows ahead 👊🏻 - the best way to get excited instead of disappointed is to turn a setback into a spring board 🏄🏼‍♀ • By taking the emotion out of the results, you are left with feedback. Use this feedback to analyse what you still need to improve or work on that will yield the biggest rewards. For example, if you often make mistakes on course because your horse is not doing it’s lead changes, then work on that with full attention until it’s a strength. Or if you often ride under your rhythm and get into trouble because of that, make sure to work in every training on getting comfortable and used to riding in the right rhythm. • The best way to use the feedback to your advantage is by asking helpful questions after every training, course and show. 1⃣ What went well? 2⃣ What could have been better? And 3⃣ How are you going to improve this? Remember to do this every time! • 👉🏻 Was this helpful for you? 🚨 CLIENT STORY 🐎 Zoé Conter - How to bounce back after a bad fall . Ever wondered what mental training is really all about? 🤔 You are not alone… When thinking about what a mental coaching session is like, many riders might still picture someone lying down on a sofa 🛋 and opening up about their issues to a dull therapist with a crazy imagination. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth! So, in this series, I unveil the mystery by sharing some of the challenges that clients of mine have faced and how, together, we turned things around 🙌🏻. For this case study, I’m sharing Zoé Conter’s story with you. . Zoé needs little introduction. She is only 21 but has already established an impressive track record of success. From winning a team gold and individual bronze medal at the European Junior championships in 2016 to riding 5* shows, Zoé has been there and done that 🏆 However, in May 2018, whilst competing at an international show in Rome, she had a nasty fall with her horse and ended up breaking her neck. Falling off is one thing but getting severely injured is another. How do we bounce back after an accident like that? As some of you know, I’m writing my second book 📖 and for this I have interviewed 15 top ranked riders from all around the 🌍 to answer questions such as: “What do top riders have in common? What are their patterns? And, if we apply these same habits, can we also improve and reach success?” I have found many similarities across top riders but the ones that perhaps struck me the most are these three: 1⃣ They all have an incredible focus once they are on the horse! They become one with their equine partner and completely focused on feeling what’s happening underneath them and, at the same time, thinking ahead about their next move. 2⃣ What motivates riders like @jeroendubbeldam for example to get up every morning and to keep working hard? Their love for horses and their passion to keep improving (growth mindset)! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 3⃣ And lastly, they don’t take failure personally! In fact, to them, making mistakes motivates them to train harder and focus even more on improving themselves. They learn from their setbacks and they move on 👊🏻👊🏻👊🏻 . As many of you know, as a mental coach, I work 1-1 with riders to help them reach peak performance and feel fulfilled and happy on their journey towards success. Up until recently I had been working with packages of 4 coaching sessions, which I typically run over 2 months, as I found this to be most effective for my clients in general. However, recently, I experimented with a different and more radical format 💡 Often, changing old habits and beliefs and transforming these into new ones requires us to go a little deeper, more quickly 💪🏻 So, as a result I have created a whole new coaching package: The Transformative Coaching Program ⭐️ This means working with me for 2 full days, and dramatically changing the way you think, feel and act on a day to day basis 👊🏻 Yes, it’s a little intense and not for everyone 🤯 but if you want to change your life radically, you need a radical approach! If you are that kind of person and are ready to transform your life forever, make sure to 1⃣ check out the link in my bio for more info and for a summary of how it works etc 2⃣ DM or 📧 me to set up your free of charge intro call ☎ I look forward to hearing from you 🤗 #transformative #coaching #nextlevel #yesyoucan #changeyourthoughts #changeyourlife #equestrian #mental #sport #coach #annettepaterakis

It’s not the mistakes, failures or setbacks that determine whether you make it or not - it’s your attitude and response to it! How do you respond to setbacks? Do you feel discouraged or motivated to improve? In case you recognise you often feel negative 👎🏻 down or unmotivated, make sure to follow these 3 steps: . 1⃣ Change your state! Recognise how your body language, thoughts and focus are very different when you’re hungry and motivated to improve 🤩 vs when you’re feeling discouraged 😕 so, move 💪🏻, think 🤔 and focus like you are already winning 🏆 . 2️⃣ Change your perception of failure! Setbacks and mistakes are just feedback, learn from them and train yourself and your horses 🏇🏽during the week to improve constantly! . 3️⃣ Read and educate yourself 📚 Your results won’t change unless you change! Great books I recommend are: Black box thinking (M.Syed), Mindset (C.Dweck) and Keep Calm & Enjoy The Ride (🙋🏼‍♀ get your copy on Amazon) . 🚨 Want to learn more about how you can change your state, how you can reflect on and grow from your mistakes, and how you can adopt a growth mindset? There was a time where I was struggling to find my way, I knew I was not happy about many areas in my life but I didn’t know if I should just continue to #slay away or call it a day 🤷🏼‍♀️ I was lost and I didn’t know what to do. My intuition was telling me something needs to change, I can do better than this, but it took me a while before I finally took action and changed my life. So if you’re feeling lost, a lack of energy or are crying every 3 seconds 😭 than take a moment to tune in, take a few deep breaths and ask your intuition what to do. If your still struggling, make sure you ask for help! You don’t have to figure it all out on your own, call a friend or find a life/mental coach to help you create the life you desire and to feel positive, fulfilled and focused again. Trust me it is possible, if I can do it, you can too! In fact, it’s our birthright to get up most days feeling amazing and ready to take on the world 🌍 If you know someone who needs to hear this, make sure to tag them 👇🏻 and send them some love 💕 #mondaymotivation #slay #away #andfindyourway #sharingiscaring #equestrian #mental #sports #coach #annettepaterakis

🚨 BLOG ALERT - 4 lessons from Laura Kraut to get your game to the next level 🏆 As Tony Robbins says, “If you want to become great in a certain area, make sure to model those who have already achieved it.” 👩🏼 I am a firm believer that we have so much to learn from those at the top of the sport, so I have interviewed more than 15 top-level riders to learn from them, how they train, how they prepare mentally for competition, and how they bounce back when things don’t go as planned. Back in 2017 I had the privilege of interviewing Laura Kraut. 🙏 She shared so many amazing insights with me and I want to share some of these with you now 👇🏻 . 1️⃣ Connect with your horse 🐎 - The first important lesson is about connection. Laura explains how she learned to really feel the horse beneath her. “We had to learn to ride our horses just with our seat, leg and our voice. We had many lessons where we weren’t allowed a bridle or even a halter. We had to teach them to go around like that and jump courses with poles. At the time, I didn’t think that was particularly helpful, but in hindsight, I think it was amazing because it helped me understand the movement of the horse underneath me and to be able to feel and read what my horse was thinking.” This ability to deeply connect with her horses turns out to be crucially important to Laura in the ring today as it directs her focus straight to what matters most, her horse and the course. . 2️⃣ Train your brain 🧠 - A second, very valuable skill in show jumping is to have a quick and calculating brain (...) . 👉🏻 Want to continue reading? - Just follow the link in my bio! 👆🏻 . Anyone watched Street food on Netflix? If you’re a foodie, you must check it out 🤤 As well as the gorgeous food, I 💖 the life lessons in each episode. I wanted to share this quote ☝🏻 from a Japanese street food chef with you all, as it really resonated with me. . Focusing on progress and success is important but when we add to that the love for sharing that success and wealth with others and wanting to make a real impact in the world 🌍 everything changes. Many athletes, astronauts and adventure seekers fall into depression once they have achieved their goals. Why? Because happiness is about progress not completion. So when we can look beyond what we can do ourselves and think about how we can serve others, we tap into deep, long-lasting happiness! . 👉 So, how can you help your fellow riders, friends or random strangers? Sometimes, just sharing a smile 😊 might be a big gift 💝 . 1️⃣ Start by sending a big smile to someone you know in the comments below 😀 2️⃣ Think about how you can share your knowledge and expertise with others, and then make sure to take action! 👏 . #sharethelove #lifelessons #happiness #sport #mental #coach #annettepaterakis

Let’s get real, things aren’t always positive unlike what we might think when we spend too much time on social. So I have to be honest too. I’m having a love/hate relationship with writing my second book at the moment 🤷🏼‍♀. On the one hand I love the learning process and challenging myself. On the other hand I have set myself the goal to release the book this year which adds a lot of extra pressure, especially with all the other fun opportunities that are coming up at the moment. So, determined to make more progress in shorter amount of time, I have found an app that offers a 15min summery for all kinds of non fiction books (Blinkist) 💡I’ll still need to research the books 📖 like this one☝🏻but at least I can be quicker in my initial research and determine quickly which books and chapters to research more in debt. Moral of the story, (no not quick fixes do work 🙄) if your absolutely CERTAIN you want or need to reach a certain goal, you will find a way 💪🏻 Say “yes” if you agree! Ps. And stay hydrated along the way 💦😄 #getreal #firststep #thesportsgene #keeplearning #focusontheprocess #workinprogress #mental #sport #coach #annettepaterakis

I’ve received such lovely comments from many of you and I am so delighted that it’s making such a big difference to so many people’s riding - and in their lives 🙏 . Today I wanted to share with you Ella Cheminais’ story. Ella is a South African rider and she completed the program last month (follow @ellacheminais) 🇿🇦. This is what she had to say: "Since taking your online program, I’ve noticed a huge difference – not only in my results but also in my ability to apply my focus on what’s important. Through the many exercises that you have provided I have been able to channel my negativity and my nervousness into something positive. I cannot recommend the program enough due to what it has done in my life. It has changed my riding and my mindset for the better, and this is evident in the results I have achieved. Overall, I would just like to say a massive thank you for changing my riding and allowing me to enjoy the ride more." . 👉 Are YOU ready to take your mental game to the next level? Ever noticed when you put the pressure on yourself to get a certain result, it doesn’t work? 🤔 Let me explain why: 1️⃣ When you NEED a result, cause otherwise you can’t be - happy, confident or believe in yourself - you put so much pressure on yourself it actually backfires. However, when you know you CAN win and go for it, that’s a different story. The difference is that the first driver is fear. The second is based on conviction and confidence 👊🏻 2️⃣ You can set high goals and have big dreams, but when you’re in the ring, make sure to stay focused on the process only! If you get carried away by thinking about what the outcome should be, you will get distracted and stop focusing on what’s happening in that moment. So, take a deep breath and focus on what you need to do every step of the way, then the results will ultimately come to you! 🙌 3️⃣ Want to learn how to be more in the present moment, really connect with your horses and focus on the process? Then check out my Master Your Mind Mental Training App and take your mental game to the next level (link in bio)☝️

🚨 CLIENT STORY 🐎 Jennifer Goddard on letting go of self criticism - As there is still some mysticism around mental coaching and sport psychology, I’d like to raise the curtain by sharing some of the challenges that clients of mine have faced and how, together, we turn things around. For my second case study, I’m sharing Jenn’s story. Jennifer Goddard is an American show jumper based in the Netherlands. With up to Grand Prix level experience, she is currently focused on acquiring young prospects, working them up and selling them on, with great success thus far. Last year Jenn sold one of her projects to Eric van der Vleuten and it is shaping up to be an excellent partnership 🙌 . However, in summer 2018, when Jenn reached out to me, she was not pleased about her mindset and progress in the sport. Apart from the results in the ring, Jenn had noticed that her own mind had become her biggest downfall and it was holding her back from being the best rider she could be. She constantly set the bar too high for herself and when she could not meet those often unrealistic expectations of perfection, she would beat herself up for it. Needles to say, this had a negative impact on her self-confidence and motivation (…) . As some of you know I went to an event with Tony Robbins last weekend. I would say Tony is definitely one of my hero’s and I wanted to share this quote with you all, because when he mentioned these words last Thursday, it really resonated with me and I’m sure with many of you too! It’s so easy in the sport to start expecting or wanting certain results, and when they fail to appear, we get frustrated, angry or disappointed. As a result we put even more pressure on ourselves to do well (often without changing the plan 🤨) and we fail to get our desired results again over the weekend... do we detect a vicious cycle 🔄 here? Easy way to snap out of that negativity and fixed mindset, is to just focus on why you are so lucky to be riding at all! Need some ideas? 💡 1⃣ You are able to ride 2⃣ You have a horse to ride!!! 3⃣ Spending time with horses 4⃣ Being outside in nature #attitudeofgratitude #grateful #blessed #tonyrobbins #hero #equestrian #sport #mentalcoach #annettepaterakis @tonyrobbins

Thanks for the reminder @danieldeusser 🙏🏻 I’ve had some interesting conversations with clients this week about how riding is all about keeping it simple. Daniel explained it as follows: “keep it very, very simple by thinking about what you need in the ring and then improve and work on that a little bit every day. You need a gas and you need a brake, and you need to be able to turn left and right. Evaluate what happens in the ring by keeping it simple, and then go from there” Sometimes we make it more complicated than it has to be and actually doing very little, or sitting very still is the hardest thing to do. So, keep training your mind as well as your horses to stay focused on the essentials and to keep believing that everything is possible! #happyweekend #enjoytheride #keepitsimple #equestrian #sport #mental #coach #annettepaterakis

🚨 BLOG ALERT 🚨 How to take action to increase your self-confidence . We all know self-confidence is one of the most important mental skills you need on the horse. You can train as much as you like, but if you don’t believe you are good enough or that you can win classes, you probably won’t. Instead of waiting until the results come in to give you a reason to be confident, take action now! Become the most confident version of yourself and create the results you desire. Here are 5 steps to help you boost your confidence: . 1️⃣ Step into the most confident version of yourself - Have you ever noticed how after watching an action movie or empowering video you feel more inspired, excited and perhaps more confident? That is because self-confidence is largely influenced by your physical state. So, when you change your physical state, you can change the way you feel and even think. You can step into the most confident version of yourself by taking on a confident body posture. Just remember, chin up, chest out and shoulders back. . 2️⃣ Be authentic - Notice how I mentioned “step into the most confident version of yourself”, not someone else’s (...) . Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about how we deal with adversity. We all face challenges in our lives, but it’s how we react to them that makes the difference. When we fight reality, get annoyed with the set back, get disappointed with the injury or sad about negative results, we add to the discomfort, we add negative energy to the situation and we stay focused on the problem. Instead, we can learn to embrace the discomfort and learn from the feedback, make the most of the freed up time cause of the injury or rise to the occasion to become a stronger version of ourselves. Realise you have a choice and that every situation in life is an opportunity to either give in to what’s easy, or to become stronger 💪🏻 the choice is yours! #weekendreflection #embraceit #stronger #masteryourmind #mentalcoach #annettepaterakis

🚨 BLOG ALERT 🚨 Anna-Liza Makkinga, enjoying the ride! . In the coming months, I’ll be sharing with you some of the challenges that clients of mine have faced and how, together, we turned things around. For my first case study, I’m sharing Anne-Liza’s story. Anne-Liza Makkinga is a Dutch rider, with her own yard based in the Netherlands. She competes internationally at 2* to 5* level. . Anne-Liza and I met for our first session in April 2015 during a horse show in Lanaken, Belgium. Anne-Liza told me how she had been doing well over the past few years, winning a grand prix in Geesteren and competing for the Dutch Nations Cup team in Lisbon and Lummen. However, for some reason, her confidence taken a hit over the past year or so and, with that, her motivation plummeted too. She wanted to believe in herself again and be more consistent in her riding, as things were very up and down lately. . “I have taken a big step forward as a rider”, Anna-Liza Makkinga . Feeling humbled by the kind and inspiring words from @antmendes about working with me and his mental toughness journey 🙏🏻 • I have always admired the mental skills from the top riders of the sport: self control, motivation, consistency, self-confidence, thinking it is something natural for them. Something you are either born with it or not. I was in a moment of my career that I was not improving, I was not happy with my results, my riding and the way I was doing things. In general I was not motivated even though I spent most of the day working, training and trying to improve. I decided to do something about it, try to solve it from a different angle than training and working because that was not giving me the results I was expecting. Since I started the Mental Training Program with Annette, things slowly started to change. She taught me that mindset, as any other skill, can be trained and improved and that you can use it to your advantage to bring out the best version of yourself. She is teaching me the proper tools, techniques and routines, not just to improve my mindset, but to recognise and be aware of the triggers and situations that can affect my riding and my performance so I can do something in advance to control my mind. And most important she is teaching me to enjoy this exciting journey. I used to think that through the process I will become better in the sport, that I will improve my results, now I realise that the biggest change I am experiencing is to realise every day how lucky I am about about my life. I started riding because I loved horses and the sport not because of the results and the recognition of others, Annette is helping me to focus on those things that make you enjoy the journey while you reach your goals. I can definitely say that I am going through a life changing experience that I think everyone should try. • Can’t thank you enough for sharing this Antonio! 🙏🏻 Want to read the full story and more success stories? 🚨 BLOG ALERT 🚨 What not to do when competing at the WEF . With hundreds of riders and thousands of horses competing together for over 3 months, the Winter Equestrian Festival in Florida is an amazing opportunity to compete against the best riders in the country and the world. However, it can be quite daunting to be surrounded by the best of the best, and to constantly be reminded of how many other great riders and horses are out there. Here are a few reminders to stay in control of your mental game and to enjoy your time at this beautiful event: . 1️⃣ Don’t forget your course plan. Competing at a show like the WEF can already add some unwanted pressure. This anxiety can kick in the moment you enter the arena to walk your course. As you might have experienced before, this can result in you forgetting your course half way through your round. This happens because the anxiety prevents your brain from functioning properly. The part of your brain that usually memorizes new information is currently occupied with your anxiety. Therefore it is very important to find ways to relax your muscles and breathe deeply as this will send out a signal to your brain that all is well again. Practice breathing and relaxation exercises at home once a day. This is a great way not only to relax your body and mind, but also to train your focus. . 2️⃣ Don’t lose hope. Competing against 100 or more great riders in your class can be quite humbling and might cause you to lose hope before you have even started (...) . Often, when I tell my clients to use confident (body) language to feel more confident, they’ll say, “but I don’t want to come across arrogant!” So here is what I think. Confidence is not arrogance! When you feel confident you believe in yourself and your abilities. Unlike when your arrogant, you believe you are better than others. That’s a big difference! It’s good to be humble, but it’s equally important to feel deeply confident, it serves you in whatever you do in life, whether on the horse or in the board room. So fake it till you feel it, so you can use it when you need it! 💪🏻 #confidence #bossbabes #yougotthis #mondaymotivation #equestrian #mentalcoach #annettepaterakis

So I have arrived in Florida 🇺🇸 on Monday and already have met some wonderful people and clients I hadn’t seen in a while! This morning I went for a run and walked back over the beach finding myself counting all my blessings realising how grateful I am for my journey! With all its amazing moments, but also for all the difficult ones. Those were the days that I could only dream of the life I’m living now! I often have to pinch myself that I can travel for work, something I always wanted to do. Do what I love, learn new things and meet new people almost every day and be able to make a difference for others in the process 🙏🏻 What are you feeling grateful for today? Please share in the comments below 👇🏻 ps. 🚨 BLOG ALERT 🚨 Peder Fredricson’s mental skills and how you can apply them too . As you probably know by now, I love learning from the best, and Peder Fredricson is definitely one of the best equestrians active today. So, eager to talk to the well-rounded, ever charming, eventer-turned-showjumper, I asked Peder about his journey in the sport, his learnings and, of course, his mental skills. As it turns out, he has a whole lot of insights to share with us in this area! I have summarized these into 5 steps you can also take right away to sharpen your mental skills. . 1️⃣ Keep learning. I asked Peder if he ever worked on his mental skills, to which he replied, “All the time! When you are faced with pressure or difficulties, you have two options: you either give in, or you fight to find a new way, to learn new skills and to create a solution to your problem.” Peder does just that. By constantly learning and improving himself, he turns his weaknesses into strengths. By acknowledging what you still need to improve on and finding ways to do that, you can turn your weaknesses into strengths! Reading books is perhaps the easiest and sometimes the most effective way. . 2️⃣ Work smart. Peder was working very hard, doing all the possible chores around the barn and he enjoyed it. However, (...) . Want to continue reading? - Just follow the link in my bio! ☝️ . If you enjoyed it, please share this post 🙏 . Last year I spoke to McLain about anything mental toughness! He has had such an interesting mental journey himself and when asked what advice he would give other riders on their pursuit to success, this was his reply: “If your only reason for riding is to one day go to the Olympic Games, you should pick something else. Because if you don’t enjoy the journey, the battle and the competition and all of that, than it’s not going to be much fun. You’ve got to enjoy what you are doing!” 🙏🏻 Amen to that! Who else agrees? As you may know I LOVE reading, or actually, I love learning as a result of reading. I didn’t always used to though, when I was young I’d avoid it as much as I could (couldn’t focus so got more distracted while reading than anything else 🙄) Luckily my love for learning (and improvement in focus) has changed my reading habits and I would like you to do the same thing. So, from now on I will aim to share with you 1 book a month that I’ve enjoyed reading and why. I also hope you guys will want to share your thoughts and suggestions 🙏🏻 This book 👆🏻Shoe dog, I absolutely loved reading and finished it in a week (thanks for the recommendation @marielagu )! It’s the autobiography of the founder from Nike 🏃🏼‍♀ and it’s a great example of how big successes start with humble and often challenging beginnings. I so agree with one of the last quotes in the book 📖: “Sometimes you have to give up, sometimes knowing when to give up, when to try something else, is genius. Giving up doesn’t mean stopping. Don’t ever stop!” Something to think about over the weekend 🙄 if you have read any autobiography’s you recommend, please share below 🙏🏻👇🏻🙏🏻 #favouritereads #bookofthemonth #learnfromthebest #shoedog #nike #equestrian #mentalcoach #annettepaterakis

Perhaps a strange thing to say, that I aspire to love failure. But let me explain. I’m working on my book - going well by the way, we are in the flow 🙏🏻🤓- and am digging deep into the topic Mindset for one of the chapters. Carol Dweck explains in her book, “people in a growth mindset don’t realise when they are failing, to them they are learning and they love learning”. I have to admit, I don’t love failure yet, I too worry what people might think of me (yes, I too am work in progress), but I do know that I have made a massive shift from a fixed to a growth mindset, and I know you can too! So let’s challenge ourselves and aim to love and embrace failure. To keep failing and to keep getting better 👊🏻💪🏻 need some help to shift into a growth mindset, or know anyone who does? Make sure to have a look at my Master Your Mind online training program, link in bio ☝🏻I’m sure you’ll love it 😉😍 #lovelearning #failbetter #mindset #wednesdaywisdom #equestrian #mentalcoach #annettepaterakis

🚨 BLOG ALERT 🚨 7 Limiting Beliefs That Are Holding You Back — Most of our beliefs are formed by all the information we get from the people around us as a child. Up to the age of 6 for instance, we don’t have the experience or the knowledge to compare that information or those stories with other information, so when we hear the same stories a few times, we believe them. These beliefs can be helpful but can also be limiting and, growing up, they often become subconscious. So when we go trough our lives with limiting beliefs that are holding us back, we often don’t realize it is just the belief that is blocking us from succeeding or improving. . I have listed a few common limiting beliefs that might be holding you back. In case you find it hard to turn these beliefs around on your own, it might be a good idea to find a mental coach or therapist you trust to work on them together 👭. — 1️⃣ I don’t have what it takes. Do you believe you are just not born or destined to become great, successful, or even – extraordinary? If so, this limiting belief is holding you back from reaching your full potential. Think about it, if you believe without a doubt that you are going to be a great and successful rider, you will always look for answers and ways to become just that. The opposite is also true. If you look for it, you will always find reasons why you can’t do something. Either you choose to have an excuse, or you choose to find a solution. The decision is yours. . 2️⃣ I don’t have enough willpower. When you tell yourself repeatedly that you don’t have the willpower to train harder (...) . Need a little lift me up 😅? 3 easy ways to stay motivated and on track. 1⃣ REST, we often underestimate the power of rest and sleep, but getting in enough 💤 is crucial to long term success, so get in your 8h and a little snooze whenever needed to kick some 👊🏻 2⃣ TRAIN deliberately! Don’t just get on your horse 🐎 walk, trot and canter, instead get a great trainer or follow a tried and tested training schedule to achieve great results 3⃣ Finally, remember WHY you started riding in the first place! Remember why you love what you do. Probably the love 💖 for horses 🐴 has something to do with it 🤔 If this was helpful for you, make sure to share this with your bestie who could also do with the above 👆🏻🤠 or, in case you need more than just a few tips and your motivation has been below 0 for a while, make sure to check out my Master Your Mind online training program to get back in control once and for all! BLOG ALERT 🚨🚨🚨 — 5 Tips To Maximize Your Course Walk 🚶🏼‍♀️🚶🏼‍♀️ — Your mental preparation starts the moment you walk your course. It might seem like just another routine at the show and, after riding many horses at many shows, you might feel like you can get away with a quick browse or walk through the numbers. However, the better your preparation, the better your ride will be. Don’t leave anything to chance and prepare like a pro. Here are five tips to help you do just that: 1️⃣ Walk with confidence 👊 Ever watched Kent Farrington, Scott Brash or Tiffany Foster walk the course? What do these top jockeys have in common? Do they walk like they are going to lose, or like they have already won? You guessed it. Their whole body posture translates relaxation, focus and confidence. Research shows that even when holding a confident body posture for just two minutes, the hormones you release change. Your “let’s kick some ass” hormone – testosterone – kicks in and your stress hormone Cortisol drops. So next time you walk the course, make sure to step into your most confident version of you first. 2️⃣ Memorize it like a story (...) 😄 Want to continue reading? - just follow the link in my bio! ☝️ . 🙏 Please share this post or tag a friend. Call it your intuition, a gut feeling or your inner wisdom, it’s that quiet voice inside you that always knows what’s right for you. Make sure you get still for a few minutes every day so you can hear what it has to say. Your ego likes to over rule, yell and scream, but afterwards we often have to admit that our gut already knew what to do. So make sure you get quiet 🤫 to stay true to the real you. Don’t forget, let others do the same, they too know what’s best for them, when they turn inward and truly listen 💗 #mondaymotivation #innerwisdom #getstill #focusonyou #thatsall #mentalcoach #annettepaterakis
