In 1964, one of the biggest police manhunts in Victoria's history ended after a five-week chase. .
Prison escapees William Roberts, 22, and Ronald Morris, 23, were captured at gunpoint in Stanhope, where they hid on top of a 14-foot haystack. Ross Murray, a dairy farmer, notified police after he saw water running from two taps on his property; he was sure he hadn't left them running.
When police recaptured them, the men looked tired and weary. Roberts later told police they hadn't eaten for a week, and existed on milk and water alone.
In this photo from the archives, the pair is being guarded by Victorian police, barefoot, dusty and exhausted.
#tbt In the summer of 1959 (60 years ago!), we published our first magazine – featuring advice on aspirin, dinghy safety and Christmas tree lights.
Our Post Bag page highlighted letters to our advisory service including this gem from a Christchurch member: “It seems rather unreasonable that men’s shirts are made to a standard sleeve length. My father and my husband both wear a size 4 shirt but my short husband rolls his sleeves up … while my tall father suffers from frozen wrists.” #throwbackthursday
