Didn't think I'd post this but hahaaaaaaa I got rejected to sheridan's BA arts illustration program. It's definitely because I need to practice more especially lifEEE DRawing. But honestly I actually thought I'd get a higher mark on the development of ideas and visual curiosity cuz of my sketchbook but I guess not. HOPEFULLY ILL LOOK BACK AT THIS POST in a few years and be like o I see what I did wrong.
"Suess-House" - 360-degree, 3D, Mixed-media, Diorama for Montessori Student Project. The front features a self-designed "Suess-House" in a whimsical, sunny, daytime setting, while the back displays the moonlit, starry-sky, nighttime view of the house from behind.
I used acrylic-painted chipboard for the floor, wall & bushes. Flowers & sunshine constructed from foam & cardboard shapes, pipe cleaners, pom-poms, golf tees & a wooden skewer. House cut from cardboard, drawn with Sharpie & painted with watercolors.
I was inspired by Dr. Suess-week when I conceived of this project. Wanted to explore something 3D & sculptural, as I hadn't tried anything like this yet with my students. Once I was done developing the model (show here) I had to figure out how to break it down into teachable segments, while still keeping their interest & curiosity peaked. So I opted to not show them what they were working on for several weeks, instructing them through the step-by-step process of painting the floor & background, designing & painting the whimsical details of their Suess-house, & constructing their sunshine & flowers, all the while they're asking me what they're making! It worked great, cuz when they finally had all of their elements ready for assembly they were SO excited to see the model! And, they had a perfect understanding of how it all needed to come together in the end. They were familiar with every part & not at all intimidated or overwhelmed by the complexity of details or construction.
See...I told you I learned a lot from working on that month-long Treasure Book Project with them! 😉 Ya just gotta have a plan & be willing to hold the reveal while you're bombarded with anxious questions...for weeks. Lol... It's not cruel...it's strategy. And, in the end, everyone's happy with the outcome!
