Fluffy cottony fibres carpet the pavement beneath the Poplar trees next to our local park. Smoother than silk, this floss is gently jettisoned through the air by the female trees towards a slow and beautiful mess known as ‘summer snow’. It’s dreamlike to kick through, and great fun for children to chase.
Unfortunately in the UK the female tree is becoming rare due to the reluctance of urban councils to plant them. But elsewhere, notably the far more exotic Himalaya foothills, this smoother than silk ’waste’ product is being lauded as a precious natural material. It can’t be spun into yarn, but 30 million poplar saplings are planted annually for the fibres other vast uses. As it turns out, the poplar floss has super oil sorbent properties for surface water recovery, is an amazing natural replacement for both animal or synthetic stuffing, and is being developed for use in the medical industry. What’s more, it is carbon neutral in the process of growth and harvesting of the fibres for any commercial or technological use.
Increasingly, society is being encouraged to seek ways to live a more sustainable existence. I love the potential for this material to become a part of our homes, and that we may one day lay our heads on our pillows at night and bring literal meaning to the term ‘tree hugger’. How about you? Would you consider using this floss at home or for any of your own projects?
