Thought I’d post something sciencey for Sunday! Here is a shot from my days working in the #CSULB teaching collections.
Reverent care for collection specimens- including strict handling, pest control, and cataloguing procedures- ensures that they will be available to learn from for decades to come. Thankfully, it is often impossible to legally collect specimens like these, even with a permit, today. Most teaching specimens were collected by students in the 50s and 60s, sometimes earlier. I always felt fortunate to be allowed to handle them, and imagined the collector whose handwriting describes each individual on their tag...
UPDATE: reservations are now officially sold out!
There is still a couple of custom order reservations available in the shop!! I know most folks are laying low right before tax day (us too!), but if you’ve been waiting for a stress-free chance to buy, and you can, this may be your best chance :}
This is a baby kangaroo rat -- an endangered species and protected by law. They're facing loss of habitat due to urbanization and drought.
She won't get much bigger than this though -- she'll grow up to around two inches. Kangaroo rats have unfortunate names. They're not rats at all, but more closely related to gophers and they don't run. Rather, they use their hind legs to hop and their long tails like rudders -- just like kangaroos. These animals are well suited for the desert. Their unique metabolism and specialized kidneys allow it to survive without drinking fresh water or eating moisture-containing leaves.
She surprised us by hopping onto our office steps yesterday to enjoy the sunshine and say hello. Even the wild animals know they're safe here at Wildlife Waystation.
Kangaroo Rats native to western North America, have unique adaptation techniques they can survive in the desert without ever taking a sip of water. Instead, they get all the moisture from the seeds they eat. These critters have incredible hearing and jumping ability, to jump up-to 9 feet, which helps them to avoid predators. #paragenetics#KangarooRats
Krat-Panoche, after a particularly disappointing string of low-weight Heermann's krats, has captured an unmistakably large Giant kangaroo rat! Ivy was too thrilled for this guy. #fieldwork#kangaroorats#endangeredspecies
