Well, here is my big announcement! On October 19, 2019 I am going to step on the stage again, but not as an opera singer. I am going to compete in my first bodybuilding competition! . . You read that right. No, I’m not insane...well, not completely 😉. And yes, I’m VERY aware that this is going to be very difficult, probably the most difficult thing I have ever done. But losing 120 lbs was no easy feat either and I still did it. For me, this just felt like the next logical step. Something new and difficult to work towards. I don’t have dreams of winning it big and sweeping the competition...but I’m certainly going to give it absolutely everything I have. With the help and expertise of @eliteconditioning.ca , we’re going to make some serious history happen! Thank you @whyliteliftheavy for your guidance and support. It has meant more to me than you realize. Thanks also to @mattc_haynes and @ifbb_pro_xenia for your amazing Savage in Six program which got me past my biggest and hardest weight loss hurdle. Thank you to pretty much everyone who has supported me and encouraged me up until this point. I am officially 25 weeks out!! Get ready for more half naked progress pics and crazy fitness posts! Today’s ‘activations’ aka: ➡️ something to take a joint through a specific range you aim to use in the session ➡️ push some blood flow to a muscle I started with the shoulder triple-threat (it’s better than The Rock, Stone Cold and Triple H in a triple-threat match tbf) 1️⃣The aim here is taking through the shoulders/scapula through multiple movements; here we have retraction, external rotation and upward rotation of the scapula 2️⃣Second, single arm pullover - focusing on taking the lat through some range and a contraction in the shortened position 3️⃣Third, retraction/depression into push down, focusing on stabilizing the scapula as you press through triceps, allowing some long head involvement 4️⃣Lastly, the bird dog, focusing on creating motion via limbs (shoulders/hips, with a stiffened torso/spine) and creating some stiffness for the session ahead in the short term and building low back musculature endurance long term 🐦 🐶 1-2 rounds of each followed by warm-up sets of lifts. Are ‘activations’ necessary...maybe, maybe not. But this took me 5 mins or so, which I’m happy to spend.

You know those days when you get to the gym and before your first warm-up set is even over, you can already tell it’s going to be a shitty workout? Today was one of those. . I’m the type of person where the quality of my workout and the way I feel leaving the gym pretty much determines the outcome of the rest of my day. It sounds petty but if you really live for this shit, you understand. . Perfectionism is an understatement. It’s just the way I’m wired - constantly at war with myself - every day striving to be better than I was the day before. It took a long time for me to learn that just because I can’t see or feel the progression today, that doesn’t automatically mean I’m going backward. . So to highlight (according to me) the only acceptable portion of my training today, here’s a little arm finisher • 3-4 heavier sets decline curls, 5-8 reps • 3-4 moderate sets seated hammer curls 15-20 reps . I never give arms their own day unless I need a plateau breaker. I only train biceps or triceps individually and at the end of a back or chest/shoulder workout. 6-8 sets max. I’m a big proponent of attacking a muscle group as quickly as possible, getting in and getting out, especially with the small ones. . A shorter workout/more intense stimulation + quicker recovery = the ability to train them more frequently = more growth. I prefer to hit calves, abs, delts, lower back 3-4 times a week. . This is one of my favorite finishers lately • 3-4 sets to failure with a weight you can handle for 8-12 reps • Without any rest, 1 burnout set to failure with 10lb plates or dumbbells . Playing around exercise placement can also be a game changer.
