💥HOW TO GET TONED . If I am being honest here, the word “toned” is not a term I have used too much until many of my online coaching clients were using it. So let’s start off by agreeing what “toned” really means. “Toned” means visible lean muscle definition. - I get messages every single day from people who want to know how to get more lean, and more defined. We could really over complicate this, but let’s keep it simple, shall we? - You need to build muscle to look “toned”. So let’s get out there and lift some heavy weight in different rep ranges. Focus on getting strong. Really strong. Heavy is a relative term - what is heavy to you may not be heavy to another. Find YOUR heavy and go! - 🐅You will want to keep your calories in check and make sure you get enough protein. And please please don’t avoid carbs. You want to build some muscle? You gotta have carbs. Plus, carbs = life - 🐵Consistency is probably the most important part of the equation, and it’s the thing I see that is missing most often. - For some reason the expectation of perfection still looms out there. Screw perfection - consistency is what will win out - every single time. - ➡️What not to do to get toned? - ❌Endless hours of cardio. Hey, if you love cardio, then by all means, do some. Just don’t have cardio become your main focus. Cardio by itself or in lieu of strength training won’t get you the toned muscles you are looking for - ❌Stop doing a ga-zillion crunches every night thinking you will “get abs”. Hit your nutrition and your strength training hard - That’s how you get abs - ❌Stop severely restricting foods or food groups. Eat a healthy diet that includes protein, carbs and fats. All of 'em. Assault Bike Reverse Tabatas - Stole this from @defrancosgym. The @airassaultbike wipes me out quicker than any treadmill sprint ever could - and it involves your arms as well. I do two 5 minute rounds and that’s enough for me! - 2. Treadmill Intervals - I’ve posted about these quite a bit, but I like 1’ fast interspersed with 1’ walking. I always see a huge difference in my abs when I consistently do intervals. - 3. Finishers - I’ll have a separate graphic for finishers later, but basically you can take some muscle-building cardio (farmer’s walk, sledge swings, med ball slams, etc) and design your own circuit with little to no rest for 10 minutes straight. - 4. LISS - low intensity steady state cardio - I actually stole this from @jayferruggia years back. I prefer incline treadmill walking at about 60% of HR max for 30-45 minutes on an empty stomach in the morning. Advantage here is there’s no recovery needed from LISS - in fact it’s perfect for active recovery and still gets into your fat stores. - 5. Jump Rope - Got this from @jayferruggia as well. Low intensity enough to stay in the fat burning zone but also intense enough to actually burn good overall calories. Flake in the tuna, then mix in the peas, peppers, tomatoes, green onions, parsley/cilantro and olives. Add lemon juice and oil and season to taste. You don’t need a gym membership and exercise can be free. . “No motivation” - It’s a difficult one. I in particular struggle with motivation at times. Nobody wants to work 10hrs then spend more time in their workplace for a workout. But action precedes momentum. Identify daily behaviours conducive to achieving the results you want and make sure you do them every single day. Hold yourself accountable. . “I’m too old” or “My injuries are catching up with me” - Identify what you CAN do. And do that. Don’t get hung up on things you can’t do, there’s still plenty out there. . “I can’t” - A behaviour that is usually a condition called learned helplessness. People can actually do it, but they fake ignorance and incompetence so others do it for them. It comes down to your commitment, if you are committed to health and fitness, you will probably minimize your alcohol intake, enjoying an occasional drink or two, that’s fine in moderation 🔸 Want a few tricks that can help you not pack on the pounds. ▶️Get plenty of water to prevent the dehydration. If you decide to drink beer after working up a sweat, I suggest killing your thirst with a few large glasses of water first or if it’s a late one before bed and having a water bottle beside you ▶️ Reduce calories through carbs, keep your high protein and lots of vegetables, too many carbs + alcohol intake = “fat-spill-over”. ▶️Stay away from syrupy, fruity cocktail drinks which are loaded with sugar some have 500-600 calories, stick with a clear alcohol mixed with water or club soda or 5 or 6 light beers. ▶️ Get a high intensity, full body workout in before your night out. And the next day get long duration cardio the morning after, focus on lower intensity, sweating and get water back in to rehydrate ▶️ Avoid late night fast food or junk food after drinking. This will sabotage your fat loss efforts big-time! Plan ahead make sure you have an have healthy meal at home,so you can heat it up and satisfy your late-night cravings. Progress is better then nothing... September 2018 until Now . Sure the picture on the left makes me cringe a little, and the picture on the right I see progress, I am not where I want to be but I am on my way to reaching my goals. . What I see when I look at the picture on the left? . I was exhausted ALL the time. . I was in constant pain. . Never knowing how I was going to feel. . I had zero motivation. . I had tried basically all the different diet plans, workouts, wraps and pills out there and guess what they would work for a hot minute and then gain it all back because I wouldn’t stay consistent. I used food as a reward when I accomplished a weight loss goal. Wrong mindset I had. . I had nothing to wear, because everything I tried on felt too tight and made me uncomfortable. . I lacked confidence. . I didn’t feel comfortable in my own skin. . I was searching for something...anything...to help me feel like ME again! . . So what have I done to get my progress? . I took it one day at a time. . I stopped worrying about the number on the scale. . I stopped worrying about how long it would take. . I stopped focusing on what I was doing wrong or what wasn’t happening. . I stopped feeling guilty for making my health & wellness a priority. . I stopped thinking I had to, or could, do it all alone. . I stopped QUITTING! . . Instead I started taking 30 minutes a day for exercise. . Lower Back Pain💥 - In this video myself and @theosteopathcliniccroydon address lower back pain, particularly, how we can reduce stress on the lumbar spine through breathing exercises such as the video above. - Did you know that in addition to controlling breathing mechanics (inspiration and expiration) the diaphragm muscle also plays a role in stabilising our lumbar spine. Part of the reason for some lower back pain is down to the instability of the lumbar spine. Lack of diaphragm activation can result in overactivity of lumbar muscles causing pain in the lower region of the back. - Past research (Finta et al. 2018)👨🏽‍🔬suggests that diaphragm training has an effect on the thickness of active stabilisers of the lower back, such as the transverse abdominis, which can advertently reduce lower back pain. - Random fact..during his training for the character Deadpool⚔️, Ryan Reynolds would do 3 mins of an elevated breathing drill, like this, to open up the diaphragm and help realign the body. - Give it a try and let me know how you get on👊🏾
