“When we identify with our work, it can make us feel so much ‘less than.’”
Actors - this journey is hard. Remember that you’re so much more than your resume. And during those slow periods of your career....you’re still worthy of love. (Duh.)
Working on my website and stumbled on this little #flashback from school.
Iphigenia 2.0. by Charles Mee. 2010.
This was my Capstone project at the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film. I played 'Soldier 3' in a contemporary retelling of the Iphigenia myth, which outlined all the petty political events that led up to the Trojan War. There were and still are a lot of parallels between the play and the current politics of the time. How do seemingly nameless soldiers justify supporting tyrannical or poor leaders?
I think about this show probably the most of all the shows I did in college, not just because of the politics, but because of the intensity of the work. The soldiers were on stage nearly the whole time and did pretty intense physical work onstage. The director, Shannon Cameron, used the term 'theatre of stamina' to describe what she wanted from the actors and the show. This is something that has stuck with me for quite some time. It prepared me for the long view of acting and performing. It's not just about performing at a peak for one intense show-- it's about performing for a long time. As I've heard multiple times since, it's not a sprint, it's a marathon.
Currently, I'm doing an artist's residency at @birchhousechi, learning how to challenge myself as an actor. In addition to signing on to another acting for film class, finding a new mentor, building out my voice over studio in my apartment, and doing this residency, I've decided to work on doing more photography-- to gain better visual literacy, to be a better subject for the camera and a better eye for the camera.
My homework for Birch House's residency is to read Austin Kleon's Show Your Work. An excellent read. He's challenged me to #showyourwork, and so I'm hoping to outline all the work I'm doing here and on my website blog at actorgary.com. I'll be dropping fun insights and troubleshooting there, so check it out.
This photo seemed appropriate for this: definitely practicing some theatre of stamina. It's not a sprint, it's a marathon, but you can't let your run turn into a walk.
Here's to a fun new artistic workout!
There’s so much more to a headshot than just a “good” picture of someone’s face. In my personal experience, genuine, authentic expression is best achieved when people feel like they’re being treated like people, not an end goal.
“Who am I?
Am I the handsome, confident, talented person people say I am?
Or am I inadequate, weak, and uninspiring like I often think?
Am I a brilliant, Black creative?
Or am I unoriginal and far from unique?
Are these good qualities synonymous with who I am as a person... or something that I could only seek?
Is it soul food to cater to my vast imagination, so that I can feel better about myself?
Or is it the honest truth that I couldn’t discover without a little help?
Am I more than what I perceive?
Or is this something so stupid for me to believe?
I am who I am....”

Not an Easter pic....but I like it :) .
Because you might not know this....but I had ZERO friends when I moved here. And as a guy who has always struggled with confidence issues....this didn't help.
Five years ago I started reading self help books. I started learning from really smart people because I was in a network marketing company. Today - it's like I'm a freaking different person. .
And I really, really wish more actors knew about these mindset hacks.
Because et's be honest - being *happy* in a career with rejection, day jobs, comparison....and, ahem, being broke.....it's hard. It's really hard.
Let me help.
Come to @nextdoorchicago tomorrow night. There's a workshop called You’re a Broke Artist. It Doesn’t Have to Suck. It's free.
I'll share a START doing list and a STOP doing list to help you learn why "this doesn't have to suck." We really can be inspired AF - even with a day job. .
See you tomorrow. Link in bio!
PS - Can't make it but want to know when I'm hosting more of these? DM me :)
